Silicon anodes explained: more energy and faster charging than graphite

Silicon can store far more lithium than graphite, and silicon-carbon materials are now made at automotive scale – the challenge is controlling how much silicon swells.

Almost every lithium-ion battery today uses graphite in its anode. Replacing part or all of it with silicon is one of the most practical ways to raise energy density and charging speed without changing the rest of the cell – and in 2025–2026 it moved from pilot lines to automotive-scale plants.

Why silicon – and why it is difficult

Silicon can hold up to 10 times more charge carriers than graphite, but pure silicon tends to crumble as it expands and contracts during cycling.1 The industry's answer is composite materials: silicon held inside a porous carbon scaffold whose internal voids leave room for the silicon to expand.1

Automotive-scale production has started

Sila started automotive-scale production of its Titan Silicon anode material at Moses Lake in Washington State in October 2025. The silicon-carbon material is designed to replace graphite and, according to the company, enables up to 20% higher energy density than leading graphite cells and up to two times faster charging. Initial capacity is 2–5 GWh, with plans to expand up to 250 GWh within five years.2

Group14 closed a US$463 million funding round led by SK in August 2025, with ATL, Porsche and Microsoft among the investors. It operates three factories – two in the US and one in South Korea – and says its material can raise energy density by up to 50% and cut fast-charging times to under 10 minutes.1

Not just a drop-in

Silicon-rich anodes change how a cell has to be designed: swelling puts mechanical stress on the electrode stack, so cell format, pressure and ageing behaviour have to be validated again rather than simply swapping one powder for another.

What to watch: independent test data from cars and packs in service – company claims of 20–50% more energy describe cells and materials, not complete vehicles.

What it means for Central & Eastern Europe

For the region's cell plants and their equipment and testing suppliers, silicon-rich anodes mean new materials to qualify and new questions about cell pressure, swelling and ageing tests. Cell makers, materials companies and test labs in the region are listed in our directory.
