Samsung SDI's profit rebound runs on US storage orders – its Hungarian plant stays an EV bet
Samsung SDI returned to profit on energy storage demand centred on the US, while its Göd plant in Hungary keeps expanding for electric-car cells.

What happened
Samsung SDI posted a third-quarter operating profit of 407.8 billion won, against a loss a year earlier, on revenue up 52.6%. It has secured more than 60 GWh of energy storage battery orders this year and is building out its Indiana plant as the hub for US demand.1 The company also said it had won an LFP electric-car battery project in Europe and that its Hungarian hub will proceed with prismatic EV lines as planned.2
Why it matters for CEE
Göd's role is defined by electric cars, not storage. The government granted HUF 133 bn in aid towards a HUF 955 bn expansion that the ministry describes as capacity for EV battery cells and modules, due to be completed by the end of 2028.3 The plant's prismatic range now includes LFP and mid-nickel cells, and Hungarian press has reported, without confirmation from either company, that two lines could be converted for Volkswagen.4
For the region this suggests that Samsung SDI's storage growth is, for now, a US story, and that Hungary's exposure to the company remains tied to European car demand.
What to watch
Whether Samsung SDI names the customer and plant for its new European LFP project – an allocation to Göd would be the clearest signal for Hungary.
