Solid-state and semi-solid-state batteries

Replaces the liquid electrolyte with a solid one. Promises higher energy density and safety, but all-solid-state cells are still at the prototype stage.

Semi-solid-state batteries are already commercial, while 'almost-solid' and all-solid-state designs are at the prototype stage; the IEA notes that their advantages have not yet been demonstrated in real-world applications.1

Toyota plans its first all-solid-state vehicle by 2028; BYD plans its first all-solid-state EV from 2027 and mass production from 2030. The IEA expects the technology to stay limited to premium segments until the first half of the 2030s.1
